Television – What to Watch in January 2013

So much great television starts AND ENDS this month.  I thought I would help you prepare for some major upcoming television moments.

Sunday, January 6th:
  • Downton Abbey – PBS – If you were like me and late to the game, have no fear.  Head over to Netflix or Hulu Plus and catch up on the first two seasons of this great show from Britain.  Now, I have already seen this season, the all new season 3.  You see, it already finished airing this complete season over in England.  And thanks to the internets, I’ve been able to watch it all.  If you are a fan and haven’t gotten sneaky, just you wait – there’s a lot of shock and awe to this season ahead!
Monday, January 7th:
  • Bunheads ABC Family – If you’re a big fan of Gilmore Girls, chances are you’ll love this show.  Season 1 is available on the web, but producers also put together one big video recap to get you ready for season 2.  I enjoyed the first season for the most part, and I’m curious to see where we’ll go this season.  It’s basically about this dancer who never really made it big, but could have.  And now she’s living in a small town helping to run a dance studio run by her dead husband’s mom. According to ABC, we’ll start season two back with Michelle in Nevada…so it could get interesting!
Wednesday, January 9th:
  • People’s Choice Awards – CBS – “The Big Bang Theory” start Kaley Cuoco will return to host the awards show this year, which is a live show, so that’s fun.  I don’t really care about this awards show too much, BUT, it does kick off awards show season, which I love!!!
  • Nashville – ABC – I hate that I like this show so much! Hate it because it’s another hour-long drama that I’m adding to an already full list.  Hate it because I really do hate country music.  But I just LOVE the drama this show brings.  Like the girl kind of drama, the scandel and the look into life in the music industry.  It seems to be a realistic (as much as you can on tv) look into the life of a shady industry and the life of a young, troubled, but very popular singer versus the older industry legend.  Really, you would put in any sort of music in the mix and it would work.  The music is just the background to this great show.
Thursday, January 10th:
  • 1600 Penn – NBC – I’m worried about this show, but there’s a part of me that wants to like it.  It’s a comedy about a dysfunction family that lives in the White House.  Starring in the show are Jenna Elfman and Bill Pullman.  I like those two, and that’s why I want to like it.  However, the promos for the show make me want to beat my television.  “NBC’s answer to Modern Family…”  Really, you’re that desperate to get viewers? When I hear promos like that, it’s a warning that the show will suck.  But, worthy of a few episodes to see if it’s going anywhere.  They also have a “fake, fat” Jonah Hill – so that could be a deal-breaker.
Sunday, January 13th:
  • Golden Globes!!!!!!!!! – NBC – I’ve already been all over the internet talking about how excited I am for the SUPER AWESOME COMEDY DUO of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-hosting these awards.  It’s about time someone realized just how funny they are.  I’m looking forward to an amazing night.   In previous promos for the 70th annual awards ceremony, the duo teased “drunken surprises” and their commitment to speaking only in “classic Hollywood voices.” Either one would be better than any previous awards shows.  There are also internet rumors that Adele may perform, although she may hold off to perform at the Oscar’s and apparently it’s one or the other.  But if she sang…and Tina and Amy are hosting, my head may not be able to handle all that female awesomeness.
2013 Golden Globes!

2013 Golden Globes!

  • Girls – HBO – Season 2 of this series kicks off and it’s definitely on my list to catch up on, but not on my watch right now list.  I’ve seen most of season 1 and I liked it.  I didn’t LOVE it.  It’s clever and smart, but it’s also just a show about the life of girls.  I’ve lived that life – do I need to re-watch it? I will, but it’s not like a Homeland where I have to watch it LIVE or the next day!
Monday, January 14th:
  • The Carrie Diaries – The CW – I’m pretty confident I will love this show, at least I WANT to love this show.  It’s the prequel to Sex and the City.  Think Carrie Bradshow in 1984…16 years-old and moves from Connecticut to New York.  It’s the first time Carrie has seen the big city.  I’m not going to lie, I can’t wait.
Thursday, January 17th:
Monday, January 21st:
  • The Following – FOX – After spending decades on the big screen, Kevin Bacon heads to the small screen in this psychological thriller about an ex-FBI agent who is called back to duty in order to track down a notorious serial killer who has assembled a group of killers.  The preview video shows an almost naked Kevin Bacon – so I’m in.
Tuesday, January 29th:
  • Parenthood – NBC – SEASON FINALE – One of the great shows of the year.  I’ve loved this show since the beginning and I’m happy to see it now has a pretty good following and performs well in the ratings.  I’m sure the finale will have lots of tears, but I’m happy for it.  I also really am rooting for Ray Romano to stay on as a regular.
Thursday, January 31st:
  • 30 Rock – NBC – SERIES FINALE!!!! – I can’t even talk about it, only cry.
