From couch to 5k: I run a 15 minute mile

FACT: I can hold my breath for longer than I can run.

I’ve signed up for a 5K in the middle of April.  Hopefully it’s the motivation I need to really get healthy.

Here’s the ugly truth…I’ve never ran a mile in life.

I’ve always had asthma – since the day I was born.

Growing up, I could do anything other kids could do, ride my bike, roller blade, play tennis, basketball, softball.  But I could never run.

I was always excused from running the mile in gym class.  I tried a couple of times, and always ended in the nurses office with an asthma attack.

My whole life, I’ve had this problem, I just can’t run.

Even as an adult, I can do an hour on the elliptical, go to spin class…can’t run.

Doesn’t that sound dumb?

Well, I’m trying hard to get over this and figure out how much of it is health-related and how much of this is mental.

Today was DAY 1 of training.

I found a website that helps you train for a 5K and I’m off!

I did 20 minutes of intervals: jog for 60 seconds, walk for 90, repeat for 20 minutes.

I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE.

Honestly, by the second or third :60 jog, I couldn’t breathe.  I began to think, maybe I don’t know how to breathe. Could I be doing it wrong?

Maybe I am… I have no idea.

The truth is, I bet I could sit here and hold my breath for one minute and feel better after running for a minute.

It took me 15:03 to complete one mile.  That is pathetic!!!

But…Day 1 is in the books…we’ll see how long this lasts!

  1. Slow and steady… It will get easier, your lungs will learn how to adapt… If you can make it through the first couple weeks, smooth sailing !

    cheers

  2. This is NOT pathetic. You finished right? You did what you could right?

    THATS AWESOME!!

I’ve seen improvement over the last few months with my lungs and believe me when I say… I have hardcore asthma. So I totally understand. But just remember..getting out there is a HUGE accomplishment. (Oh and if you say that you running a 15, 20, 30 minute mile is pathetic again…I’ll come and punch you! *In a nice way of course*)

  3. It is SO not pathetic. You know what’s awesome? THAT YOU RAN A MILE. And that you DID IT WHILE HAVING ASTHMA. Seriously, I’m so excited for you. I’m totally cheering you on!

  4. Great Job! I remember those asthma attack days when we were kids. I know it’s a health thing but running is also a mental thing-for everyone. Just keep telling yourself you can do it and keep pushing yourself-you will be amazed at what you can accomplish! Good luck to you and keep up the good work!!
