Facebook unveils Paper; Twitter announces Dataminr

Some big announcements today from Facebook and Twitter that could change the way news junkies like me get news.

First up, Facebook introduces a news-reading app on Monday called Paper. (I hope it’s a FB app that will actually work well!!)  According to FB, the app will combine users’ news feeds with stories based on specific topics.  The app, which resembles visual news readers like Flipboard, lets users customize their feeds through sections such as sports, photography, food or design.

Sections will feature content from “emerging voices and well-known publications.”  How they select those? No idea at this point.  We’ll have to wait and see.

The app will be available for iPhone on Monday.  Here’s a sneak peek:

Meanwhile, Twitter and CNN have announced a partnership with Dataminr to develop an alert system for journalists called Dataminr for News.

According to Twitter, when news breaks, twitter can be used to close the gap between the eyewitness wanting to be heard and the journalist who wants to listen.

Twitter has always been my go-to for breaking news so I’m exciting to see how this product works. No word on when it will roll-out or be available to us non-CNN folks.  You can learn a little more about the product on Dataminr’s site.
