Summer Reading – What’s on your list?

I’m on vacation.  I’ve been here for 24 hours and I’ve already read two books.  Now that’s what I call vacation!

While we are here at the beach, we basically sit by the pool all day, play, drink, eat and read.  So it’s important I find good books.

What normally happens is that I get a bunch from the library, and then start reading them only to realize that I’ve read them before.  This happens to me ALL THE TIME. Apparently I have no memory of titles.  This year, I did plan it out a bit better and got some titles I know I haven’t read, a few that are questionable and if all else fails, I’ll just buy some to read off my ipad.

My vacation view - pool, book, drink, kids...all in arms reach.

It’s taken me awhile to really get used to reading books on my iPad, but now I’m kind of in love with it.  I especially love that I can screen grab important parts so I can be reminded of greatness well after I’ve forgotten about the book for returned it to the library.  (Have you tried the digital downloads from your library on to your device? Highly recommend it!!)

So here’s what I’m reading this summer – and please let me know what’s on your list!!!

1) Lean In

By Sheryl Sandberg

By Sheryl Sandberg

This is kind of the “it” book of the year, especially if you’re a working-professional woman.  I finished this one already and have to say it’s a pretty great read.  It gives me a lot to think about in terms of my attitude, behavior and goals.  She sounds like an amazing person to work for.  I’ve been lucky in life to have worked for some amazing women.  This book could really do some amazing things for society if people would really just stop and think.

2) Girl Walks Into a Bar...by Rachel Dratch

I love biographies.  I love female comedians.  I had no idea she had written a book.  I feel like Rachel totally gets forgotten about with all the attention on Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.  Don’t get me wrong – you know I love me those girls.  But Rachel has some really, really funny stuff and it’s sad that she is so easily forgotten in the mix.  The book really brings to life some of those issues and questions she gets all the time like “What happened to you on 30 Rock?”  “Why aren’t you on tv anymore?”  And while I kind of feel bad for her, I’m happy to read that she’s in a really good place and has had lots of blessings in her life because of some of the not-so-cool things that happened along the way.

3. Then Came You…by Jennifer Weiner

She’s really my favorite author ever.  I’ll read anything she writes and one day I’ll finally meet her when she decides to come to Florida on a book tour.  Which pretty much never happens.  I’ve been saving this book for awhile now – just waiting for vacation time.

4.  Never A City So Real…by Alex Kotlowitz

It’s a book about Chicago – I’ve heard mixed reviews but figured I will give it a shot.  This will most likely fall towards the end of my reading list.  It may be too real to read on vacation.

5.  Jeneration X.…by Jen Lancaster

Another one of my favorite authors.  When I read her books I always think…”I could totally write this…”  She’s going to be the inspiration I need to finally get writing.  I have a think with authors named Jen…. 😉

6.  You Can’t Drink All Day if You Don’t Start in the Morning...by Celia Rivenbark

It was really the title that sold it for me.  Perfect for vacation – we are big fans of Day Drinking.

And I’ve thrown in Tina Fey’s Bossypants in my reading pile again – because- if all else fails – I can totally read that book for the 108th time.  I wish I was exaggerating.
