I grew up in a very Jewish community. In Kindergarten, we learned all the Hanukkah songs…Dreidel Spin, I had a little Dreidel, Hanukkah oh Hanukkah…and that was pretty much it.
Oh how times have changed!
There’s even a Hanukkah channel on XM radio! I had no idea there was a surge in Hanukkah-related music! And no idea I could come up with ten for this list!
10. Adam Sandler, “The Hanukkah Song”-
This is the go-to Hanukkah song these days. And it’s quickly become a classic. It was first sung on a Saturday Night Live in 1994. I think my favorite part about this song is all the jewish celebrity name-dropping.
9. South Park, “A Jew On Christmas”-
“It’s hard to be a Jew on Christmas… My Friends won’t let me join in any games… And I can’t sing Christmas songs… Or decorate a Christmas tree” These South Park guys know their stuff.
7. Meshugga Beach Party, “Oh Hanukkah” –
Think of the Beach Boys playing Hanukkah music on their guitars. That’s pretty much it.
6. The Klezmatics, “Spin Dreydl Spin” –
They are like a celtic, jewish group – it’s a nice sound that I’m sure would be great to listen to with lots of alcohol. And apparently, the group is “Grammy-Award Winning.”
5. Indigo Girls, “Happy Joyous Hanukkah” –
I love me some Indigo Girls – it’s like a flash back to the late 80s/early 90s. I had no idea they did a Hanukkah song – and it’s a great one!!
4. Kenny Ellis, “Swingin’ Dreidel” –
Smooth, jewish jazz sounds get this hanukkah season swinging. However, some of the other songs are just ridiculous. “Hanu-calypso”…the perfect song for celebrating Hanukkah down in the Caribbean.
3. Erran Baron Cohen, “Dreidel” –
From Wikipedia, Erran Baron Cohen is a British composer and trumpet player, known for collaborations with his younger brother, Sacha Baron Cohen. Yes, he’s that Baron Cohen, who’s made a Hanukkah album. And it’s pretty great.
2. The LeeVees “How do you Spell Channukkahh?”
This is a great album that all Jews need to have in their collection. Great music, great fun and age old debates… like “Applesauce vs. Sour Cream.” It also includes a great version of “Nun Gimmel Heh Shin.”
1. Barenaked Ladies, “Hanukkah Blessings”
One of my favorite songs – I just love the Barenaked Ladies and this whole entire holiday album. It’s a family favorite. This original song isn’t funny, it’s a warm, sweet song about what the season and holiday is all about. Also worth mentioning, their version of Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah is one of the best around!
